Getting Started with Firefox-The Bare Necessities

In light of Internet Explorer's growing security concerns, I decided to throw together this quick list of ‘must haves' for Firefox upon installation. It should be noted this is intended for version 0.9.3 installations.

First thing...EXTENSIONS! Once you install Firefox, click on tools, Extensions and "get more extensions'.The most useful ones so far...

  • BBcode: A treasure for online forums like VBulletin, PhpBB and InvisionBoard. Instead of typing [whatever code] then [/whatever code] and all that, just type the text, select it and right-click. You'll get a flyout menu called BBCode that'll allow instant Bold, Hyperlinking, Imagelinking etc.
  • AdBlock: See an ad you don't like? Right click and select "Adblock". You'll never see it again. If you want to really get rid of it, select "Adblock iframe" (if it's available) and that whole frame permanently disappears.
  • Close Tab on Double-Click:Want to close a tab real quick? Just double click it.
  • Googlebar: It's just awesome. The default google search that comes with Firefox can't match up.
  • All-in-one-Gestures: Let's say you want to go "Back". Just hold down the right mouse button and move your mouse left. Go forward? Just hold down and move right. There's a lot more including refresh, etc.

That's it for Extensions. Now let's tackle the Tab Grouping question. Let's say you have several websites that are always open and you frequent all the time. You can open them all at once in separate tabs. I do this at work. Here's how...Bookmark them all into one folder. Under bookmarks, right click on the folder and select "Open in Tabs".

Then there's Themes. You can customize the way Firefox looks and feels. Just select tools, Themes and go find one you like.

Remember, in order for any extensions/themes to work, you have to close all Firefox windows first and then re-launch.

Hope this was helpful and welcome to the Firefox neighborhood.
