Basic Joomla Site Structure & Organization
This is a quick explanation of how Mambo works and how to structure your site. I found the documentation out there rather vague and after considerable amounts of playing, here’s what I found out…I’m going to use my site as an example.
I have a ‘Section’ called Extras on my home page. Within that Section lies 4 ‘Categories’ called Mambo, zOOm Image Gallery, Photoshop and Illustrator. Within these categories I have information and articles or as Mambo puts it, ‘Extras Items’.
Now in order to link it from the Front Page, I created a ‘Content Section’ link in my ‘Main Menu‘ pointing to Extras.
I could have created a ‘Content Category‘ link, but that gives me a direct link to either the Mambo, zOOm Image Gallery, Photoshop or Illustrator category and that would involve way too many links for me. I’d rather use a ‘Content Section‘ link that goes to the Parent ‘Section‘. See the image below…

Important: In order to get the ‘Content Section’ to appear as an option in the ‘Main Menu’, you must Publish the ‘Section’, ‘Categories’ and ‘Items’! That’s a crucial step you cannot forget.
- ‘Content Title’ is the name that appears on the Main Menu. In the case of my site, you clicked Extras.
- ‘Content Name’ appears as a header in the Body along with a brief description should you write one. I used Extras again for simplicity.
- ‘Item Title’ is the name that appears as a link. In the case of this article, you clicked “Organizing and Structuring a Mambo Site“.
- ‘Title Alias’ in the Item appears as a header within the article itself. The one on this article is labeled “How to Organize a Mambo Site“.
That’s about it. I hope this helped clear some of the confusion.
